1928 hardy wide drum , line guard , I used this reel lots over the years , first on Atlantic salmon , then when I got into steelheading , she had a special place in my heart , I ended up selling it to a bunch of good guys from B.C as a birthday gift to a well known steelhead bum on his 40 th BD , and he uses it every chance he gets , the teeth still good on such a well built old reel ,

Ok so I came across these beater Hardys in late September of 13! I have never seen a brake on a 3-3/4" before. Any one have any provenance on this? I brought it to the Skenna last week but never put it on a rod! So mid May on the Matapedia it is!

Cheers,

Bill G.

I have seen a few reels over the years with that brake on them , I've never had the chance to test one out , wish I had , often thought about how it would work

Here is my Favourite vintage reel. A Hardy 3-screw St.John, circa 1922-25. May have been the first reel with an expanded arbour spool. About 300 were made. The large arbour reels were designed as dry fly salmon reels, and had lighter springs then St.Johns made with standard spools. Those shipped to the 'colonies' were given the 'Yankee foot' made of aluminium to keep the costs down on the reel. I've never seen one with an Ivorine handle, but it is original. I fish mine on a ACR 11'7" 3wt spey.
