Thought I would start a new thread instead of trying to revive the older ones. Just wondering how people like this reel now that another season has gone by. Thinking of getting one in right hand retrieve. Any issues with tippets breaking, I use 8 lb. Anything else people have noticed, good or bad? Also what would 30 lb. backing capacity be with a Rage 510 head and a 30 lb. Ridge running line? Thanks for any comments.

I continue to like mine, although it is a backup reel that doesn't see much use.  I think the tippet issue is pretty much a non-issue.  Set the click lighter so that it is much like the Marquis Salmon #2 toward middle of its range.  It will handle at least 200 yards of 30# backing with the setup you proposed.  Miracle Braid or OPST Lazer line would offer a little more cushion.

I own two number IVs. I purchased one from Poppy and it has held up to two years of medium duty fishing. Landed some nice fish on the NU.

The second one I purchased used via another forum. Had only been lined but never cast. Perfect condition inside and out. It was set up for right hand retrieve with 20# backing. Since I retrieve left handed and like 30# backing, I peeled off all of the installed backing. Then I looked at the pawl and cog. The pawl had a big chip out of it and the cog was badly worn! Double checked my other reel and no signs of wear. Must have been a flawed pawl.

Sent it back to Orvis for repair and in two weeks received a new reel in the mail. Nice customer service backing up a defective part. I still really like the reels but I'll be keeping a close eye on the innards.

Best,

Jason

Hi Leo
I bought a Battenkill V from Poppy this year and used it on a five day trip to the Clearwater earlier this month. The fish didn't cooperate, but I loved the reel. I have the same setup that you are planning, an Airflo Rage 510 head and 30 lb Ridge running line with 200 yards 30 lb backing, and I still have a lot of room on the reel. These Battenkill reels seem well made, I like the look/aesthetic, and the in/out click is awesome; its great that such a seemingly quality product is available for such a modest price. I plan to buy another and I hope they hold up to regular use. Anyone else have some experience with this reel?
