I am sure everyone has read Norman McLean's 'A River Runs Through It' but how many complete the book by reading and other stories?

Logging and Pimping "Your Pal Jim"

This is a short that is to the point but still portrays the the same imagery found in the River Runs Through It.
This is in some ways a comical short that is set in 1927/28 where Maclean is working in the woods during his early life working as a contract hand logger with a Sawyer named Jim.
A contract hand logger is paid by the number of board feet of logs cut, so the more time and effort he put into a days work more pay he gets.
Jim is an interesting fellow and a top notch sawyer, the best in the area cutting timber during the summer months and then becomes a pimp for the rest of the year.
In his own words says that he made his living only partly by working. He really only worked  the summer then the intellectual side of him took over for the rest of the year. He would stay the winter in some small town that had a good public library where the first thing he did was take out a library card then he would start looking for a prostitute to manage then spend the winter reading and pimping. He on the whole, preferred southern prostitutes who were generally "more poetical,"

Maclean and Jim work hard through the summer, their partnership could not be described as a good example of teamwork, but the way Mclean describes the work they do and their relationship working together through the summer is insightful, and the discussion of Jim's pimping with his  "poetical" women is done well.

Jim's letter to Norman at the end of the story truly brings it all together.

I would recommend continuing on to the next story when completing A River Runs Through It, you wont be disappointed.

Although I've never seen the movie I've read "A River Runs Through It" many times and also the extra stories Mr. McLean has included. Very well written and great reading in my opinion.
